Trompe l’oeil Awards
Trompe l’oeil means to “fool the eye” through artistic techniques designed to give the illusion of three dimensional forms on a flat, two-dimensional surface.
A growing number of Chalk Artists have decided to focus on rendering highly illusionary scenes directly on the street to delight and amaze the viewing crowd. Again this year, the Museum encourages any Chalk Walk Artist to attempt a trompe l’oeil drawing in their space on the street. Two cash prizes will be awarded to the most successful trompe l’oeil pictures:
$1000 for the chalk square judged to be most illusionistic
$500 for the second most illusionistic
Additionally, three gift certificates for art supplies will be awarded to the three artists whose trompe l’oeil works merit honorable mention.
American Art Initiative Awards
In the spirit of the American Art Initiative, the Museum will award three additional cash prizes for chalk works that realistically address three subject categories of American history. This year, the prizes and the categories are as follows:
Prize 1: $250 – Memories of Robison Park
Prize 2: $250 – Apollo 13
Prize 3: $250 – Significant Women of the 20th Century
