Children’s Book Illustration Series:
Works by Allen Say

December 1, 2007 – April 20, 2008

Sponsored in part by The Fort Wayne Art League • Northwest Allen County Schools • Fort Wayne Education Association • Allen County Public Library

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Allen Say received invaluable training and mentoring when he apprenticed with a well-known cartoonist Noro Shinpei at age 12. Four years later, he departed for the United States and spent 20 years as a commercial photographer after finishing school and serving in the military.

A turning point in his career was when Say won a Caldecott Honor Award and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award as illustrator for The Boy of the Three-Year Nap. Since then he has been writing and illustrating full time and has received a number of awards including the 1994 Caldecott Medal for Grandfather’s Journey. In 2000, the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles honored Say with a retrospective of his works and in 2007 The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art organized the exhibition, The Art of Allen Say: A Sense of Place.

Say’s stories and images are often inspired by Japanese folklore and personal experiences. On view are works from El Chino, Grandfather’s Journey, Home of the Brave, Kamishibai Man, Music for Alice and The Sign Painter.
